"On March 31, 2004, the Kansas Turnpike Authority honored Knute Rockne, the player, the coach, and the man, by observing the 73rd anniversary of his fatal plane crash. The new Knute Rockne Memorial, located inside the newly reconstructed Matfield Green Service Area, milepost 97 on the Kansas Turnpike (between Emporia and Wichita) occupies ~175 sq. feet and includes large photos of Rockne during his playing and coaching days, as well as some photos from his business ventures. This new display also features a few of his well-known plays and speeches made to his players. This memorial replaces the original marker, erected in 1965 in conjunction with the Knute Rockne Fan Clubs of America."
